In seismic vulnerability assessment of the structures, definition of a damage index is essential. The purpose of this paper is to define a new index called the index of "remaining useful life of the building" and determine its application in the study of seismic vulnerability asses of the structures. The remaining useful life index can apply for Prioritize of strengthening of a series of buildings. It can be also used in the insurance industry as an indicator to understand the status of buildings. In this study, three bracing steel structures with 4, 7 and 10 floors was selected and their remaining useful life was calculated and compared with the proposed useful life proposed by codes (50 years). The results show that this method can easily express the vulnerability assessment of the buildings.
